What Do Solar Photovoltaic Installers Do?
Build a bright future in this fast-growing career.
If you’re considering a career in the solar industry, becoming a solar photovoltaic (PV) installer is a great choice. Solar installers play a crucial role in the transition to renewable energy, and the demand for their skills is rising exponentially.
But what is a solar photovoltaic installer — and what do they do? Also known as a solar panel installer, a solar PV installer is a skilled tradesperson who installs solar panels and support structures on residential, commercial, community and utility-scale projects. They are also responsible for a range of other duties, from planning solar energy system configurations to testing and maintaining solar installations.
RenewableWorks‘ solar construction team has worked with Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) companies and contractors for more than a decade and has installed over 23 GW of solar power. Our renewable energy professionals understand the industry because they’ve helped build it.
We are happy to share our industry insights with those considering career opportunities in the solar construction field. So, if you’re not sure if a career as a solar installer is right for you, read on to learn more.
Skyrocketing Demand for Solar Photovoltaic Installers
Over the last decade, solar power construction experienced an average annual growth rate of 22%, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). But the Inflation Reduction Act 2022 (IRA), which contained a $400 billion boost in federal funding for clean energy, kicked off a new era of intense growth for solar power. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIS) forecasts that U.S. solar power generation will grow 75% between 2023 and 2025 alone.
This unprecedented rate of growth in the solar construction industry has sparked a surge in demand for solar photovoltaic installers. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that the number of solar PV installer jobs will grow by 22% through 2032 — much faster than the growth rate for all other occupations. In addition to the 29,400 solar installers currently working in the U.S., the BLS expects that 6,600 additional solar installer jobs will be created through 2032.
What Solar Photovoltaic Installers Do
As a solar installer, you’ll likely work on a team that’s responsible for all aspects of a solar installation, from planning and configuration to maintenance and testing. Job duties can include some or all of the following:
- Assessing the installation site: Solar installers verify the site measurements and design, review system configurations and evaluate the installation site for suitability, structural integrity, optimal positioning to maximize sunlight exposure and other requirements.
- Install structures and equipment: Solar panel installers use a variety of hand and power tools. They measure, cut and assemble the support structure where the solar panels will be mounted. They then mount and secure the panels, including connecting the panels to inverters and electrical systems and applying weather sealant.
- Perform system testing and activation: To ensure the system operates correctly, solar installers test the panels and connections. Once the system is confirmed to be operational, safe and within specifications, installers — along with electricians and other experts — activate it.
- Document the installation project: Solar panel installers complete necessary documentation to ensure compliance with state, local and federal regulations. They also document the installation process and equipment used in each project.
- Perform system maintenance: Routine maintenance is required to assure solar system owners and operators that their installations are operating safely and efficiently. Solar panel installers inspect, test, adjust and make any repairs to structures and equipment.
All of these functions require skilled tradespeople with the training, knowledge, skills and aptitude to ensure that solar installations achieve their goals and objectives.
